Can CoQ10 help a person with MS (Multiple Sclerosis)?

We received a question “Can CoQ10 help a person with MS?” from a visitor to our web site. Here is the answer I received from one of the senior research scientists at Tishcon Corp.

“Although there is no data on a role for CoQ10 in MS, there is evidence to suggest that oxidative damage to macromolecules occurs in association with inflammation in the central nervous system, and this may contribute to a decline of energy metabolism in affected cells. As observed in neurodegenerative diseases of non-inflammatory origin, decreased ATP synthesis can ultimately lead to cell death or degeneration. Based on this observation alone, the potential efficacy of CoQ10 in MS patients should be examined, perhaps along with carnitine (L-Carnitine and Q-Gel), and I see no downside.”

As usual, we always suggest discussing issues like this with your local health care professional. In the meantime, I hope this information is of some help.
